When I informed my three sons, who are 15, 13, and 11 years old, that we were going to
Mansfield, Ohio
For the weekend, I received their typical doubtful glance meant for places without beaches or roller coasters. However, as soon as we left, they began inquiring about our next visit. “Why Mansfield, Ohio with Family Should Be Your Next Getaway” highlights this essential spot packed with engaging exhibitions, outdoor escapades, and an appealing blend of regional heritage and contemporary appeal.

No surprises… The peak experience of our journey was the famed
Ohio State Reformatory
. Familiar to many from the blockbuster movie
The Shawshank Redemption
This previous jail site isn’t just one of the leading attractions in Richland County; it’s also an essential destination along the Shawshank Trail—a do-it-yourself itinerary that both film enthusiasts and history lovers can enjoy.
We went on a private tour of the reform school where we moved through massive cellblocks, cramped isolation chambers, and the notoriously spooky wardens’ office.
My sons were totally engrossed by the tales of supernatural occurrences (they’re still arguing about whether we actually captured a spirit on camera).
They identified locations used for filming in the movie, particularly those associated with key characters, and were captivated by the tales surrounding the making of what many consider one of the finest big-budget productions filmed either in Ohio or across the U.S.
The engaging displays within the penitentiary offered an intriguing glimpse into the real experiences of prisoners, the organization of daily prison routines, and how both the facility and inmate life have evolved through the decades. There’s nothing quite like connecting with your children over paranormal encounters, discussions on penal system improvements, and testing each other’s knowledge of film facts!
My son, thoroughly dedicated to embodying the character of Andy Dufresne, restaged that famous scene from The Shawshank Redemption.
We stopped at the
Buckeye Imagination Museum
And let me share this, my children were completely reluctant to go. I had to offer them the temptation of donuts just to get them moving towards the car.
This hands-on children’s museum stands out as one of the top activities for families visiting Richland County, particularly when you’re accompanied by kids of varying age groups.
The ground floor of the Buckeye Imagination Museum caters well to younger children, featuring themed play zones and learning activities that foster creative pretend play. However, what truly impressed our group was the whole top level, which is tailored explicitly for older kids and teenagers. The youngsters darted between attractions such as the spinning climbing wall and the light beam obstacle course before getting hooked on multiplayer air hockey at the six-player station. It’s uncommon to discover a museum where both a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old remain equally captivated, yet this place managed just that. This venue offers excellent indoor entertainment without feeling like a concession, making it perfect even for bigger kids (alongside their parents).
The lads felt right at home at the Buckeye Imagination Museum.
A trip to Mansfield, Ohio, with family wouldn’t be complete without time outside.
The Ohio Bird Sanctuary
is a peaceful spot with natural beauty, interactive exhibits, and a songbird aviary. The highlight? Birds will literally land on your hand to feed. I’m not saying I cried, but it was definitely one of those core memory moments.
We also had fun hiking the numerous public paths available there.
Gorman Nature Center
and spotting wildlife in Pleasant Valley near
Malabar Farm State Park
, an operational farm and previous estate listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Louis Bromfield Visitor Education Center
R provides a robust educational experience, and we came across a maple syrup cabin. It was like something out of a pancake breakfast fantasy!

Top Amusement Parks in the Heartland of America
We made a side trip that ended up being one of the major highlights of our journey—taking driving lessons.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
If your idea of Sunday drivers involves leisurely trips through scenic routes, think differently. We witnessed something entirely different here. The track enjoys national recognition and regularly holds professional races, yet they still provide opportunities for teenagers and families to experience driving firsthand. During our visit, members of the Ohio State Patrol were honing their skills in emergency handling techniques, enhancing the thrilling atmosphere even more. Our 15-year-old couldn’t contain his enthusiasm; he’s eagerly looking forward to attending the teen defensive driving program this coming summer.
Team objectives: field trip special. Educators, teenagers, and an incredibly speedy adventure at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Zoom zoom!
The downtown area of Mansfield exudes small-town appeal.
The Carrousel District
It’s a beloved spot locally, and taking a spin on the Richland Carrousel Park’s indoorcarousel turned out to be enjoyable for everyone involved (including those initially reluctant teenagers who ended up giving it a try too).
The nearby
Renaissance Theatre
, which houses the Renaissance Performing Arts Association, frequently presents live music and an array of performances. Although we missed catching a comedy show during our visit, we did take a look inside and explored the impressively renovated historical structures. An interesting fact: Count Basie once played at this venue!
Don’t miss the
Mansfield Art Center
and
Mansfield Memorial Museum
(The oldest museum in the area) houses local history and showcases works by renowned national artists.
At Kingwood Center Gardens, my 11-year-old offspring is blatantly unimpressed with a highly serious garden statue, as evidenced by their significant eye roll. It seems they’re not exactly moved by the local artistry.
Begin your morning with breakfast at
The Blueberry Patch
The blueberry donuts are so good they’re worth the trip by themselves. Honestly, I’d travel two hours just for them. As for dinner, we suggest
Hudson and Essex
. Its sister space,
The Caverns
is a one-of-a-kind spot that combines the charm of a wine cellar with the versatility of an event space, making it completely amazing.
Our starting point for the journey was
The Voegele
, a beautifully styled Airbnb located right in the heart of downtown. The guest rooms are thoughtfully designed and full of charm, with just enough cozy touches to make even this tired mom feel spoiled. Bonus points for the washers and dryers in every hall that sync to your phone, so I always knew exactly when the cycle finished and when to pause the movie for a quick switch. It was a perfect mix of practical and pampering, all within walking distance of Mansfield’s best spots.
Another excellent choice is the
Comfort Inn Splash Harbor in Belleville
This option provides a welcoming environment suitable for families, complete with complimentary entry to its on-siteSplash Harbor water park featuring a towering 49-foot waterslide, children’s swimming area, geysers, as well as individual Jacuzzis designatedfor both adults and mixed groups.
