UPDATE: It’s confirmed, the Brendan Shanahan era has come to an end in Toronto.
Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs stated that they will not renew Shanahan’s contract for this off-season and plan to head in a different direction beginning this season.
Nevertheless, the team has stated that there are no changes to Brad Treliving’s position as general manager.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently allowed team President Brendan Shanahan to speak with the New York Islanders regarding their open Presidential role.
Chris Johnston of TSN was the first to report that the Islanders sought permission from MLSE, owners of the Maple Leafs, to converse with Shanahan.
Shanahan, whose agreement ends on June 30, has served as the president of the Maple Leafs since April 2014.
The Maple Leafs have qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in nine successive seasons since Shanahan took over, yet they haven’t managed to progress beyond the second round. Given that Shanahan’s contract is set to expire and Toronto finds itself at a crossroads, this could be an opportune moment to usher in a new era following the Shanahan chapter.
Regarding the Islanders, they’re reconstructing their management team during the next off-season following the departure of their previous president and general manager, Lou Lamoriello, who had formerly collaborated with Shanahan in Toronto. According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, Marc Bergevin and Mathieu Darche are both scheduled for a second round of interviews for the position of Isles’ general manager. Additionally, Jarmo Kekalainen is noted as another potential contender for the role.
