Bangor’s Hidden Gem Unveiled: New Wood Carving Reveals Local History

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) — At their yearly gathering on Thursday, the Bangor Historical Society presented a new artwork installation.

Dr. Edward Harrow crafted a wooden artwork illustrating the history of Bangor with emphasis on the lumber sector, the Penobscot River, and notable landmarks in the region.

The artwork doesn’t just showcase the history of Queen City; it’s crafted from historical trees estimated to be about a century old.

In the previous spring, the Bangor Historical Society needed to remove two trees located near their premises.

It’s considered a tough defeat, yet the sculpture stands as an excellent tribute.

They were present here for much of the duration these current residents have called this place home,” said Risteen Bahr, President of the Bangor Historical Society. “So when we had to remove those trees, it felt devastating. But transforming them into something new has been wonderful. While we also have several other projects underway, this one stands out as an emblematic creation born from the fallen trees.

You can view the sculpture by going to the museum located on Union Street.

It operates from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Tickets are free.
