TORONTO — A new docuseries from Ryan Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort, will focus on the Edmonton Oilers’ dominance in the NHL during the 1980s.
Producers state that “The Great Ones” will provide an unparalleled insight into the lives and careers of the Oilers players who contributed to the team’s five Stanley Cup victories from 1984 to 1990.
This five-episode series will include fresh conversations with key figures from the Oilers dynasty—such as Wayne Gretzzy and Mark Messier—as well as their competitors, commentators, team officials, and other personalities involved backstage.
The Emmy-winning director Austin Andrews, known for his work on the Netflix series “Julie and the Phantoms,” will be taking charge of the project.
The series will premiere on Super Channel in the winter of 2027.
The Oilers are presently pursuing their first Cup since 1990 as they face the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference finals.
Reynolds’ production firm is teaming up with Score G Productions, Fennessey Films, Super Channel, and OEG Sports & Entertainment to create the series.
“Maximum Effort” is also responsible for the sports docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham,” chronicling the journey of a Welsh football club under the ownership of Reynolds and actor Rob McElhenney. The series is currently in its fourth season on FX.
The report from The Canadian Press was initially released on May 21, 2025.
