Games Inbox: Could You Pull the Trigger on a PS5 That’s Also a PC?

The letters page from last Thursday is astonished that Nintendo

Box it up

Learning about the gossip surrounding the upcoming generation

Xbox

being basically

an ordinary PC

It makes complete sense and isn’t surprising at all. I believe it’s the only sensible step forward for Xbox, despite my doubts about their ability to generate profit from this approach.

Steam

And those other stores will also be listed.

PC gaming is rapidly becoming dominant, so I’m wondering if the

PlayStation 6

It could also function as a ‘PC in a box.’ Although this might seem far-fetched, not long ago, the notion of PlayStation titles being available on PCs was equally implausible. Personally, I struggle to understand any valid counterarguments, particularly considering the high cost of the PS5 Pro.

Creating the upcoming PlayStation, specifically the PlayStation 7, as a PC would allow Sony to significantly reduce their spending on hardware research and development. This shift would enable them to focus more on game development, which appears to be an area where they haven’t had sufficient resources or time for this generation.

I believe that particularly with the rise of streaming becoming the go-to casual approach for gaming, the PC might end up being the sole alternative. This is somewhat disheartening, yet from my personal perspective, as long as the games remain enjoyable, I’m not overly concerned about this trend.

Doomed highlight

I’ve just completed Doom: The Dark Ages and really loved it. I believe

your review

was correct but as I was playing it for
free
On Game Pass, the issues weren’t particularly bothersome to me. Nevertheless, I must address the storyline—or more precisely, what Bethesda emphasized as one of the game’s key new features.

It’s entirely unremarkable: dull and predictable, lacking any engaging characters. The game itself appears disinterested due to the scarcity of substantial cutscenes in the latter portion, though this isn’t an issue. Actually, none of it matters since nobody expects a narrative in a game like Doom. Then again, one might wonder why Bethesda made such a big deal out of it.

If it had been good, that would have been one thing. If there had been many cutscenes, that would have been another. However, it was simply nonexistent. I truly can’t comprehend why they bothered mentioning it at all.

Speed of Mercury

Could you consider reviewing Blades Of Fire? I’m quite keen on MercurySteam’s work since I enjoy everything they’ve released. To be honest, I adored all three of their Castlevania titles, even though Lords Of Shadow 2 had some pacing issues and felt somewhat stretched out—it still managed to capture my interest with many of its elements.

The reviews you provide are the ones I rely on the most, so if you can spare some time, I would greatly appreciate it. The couple I’ve read so far have had varied opinions.

Thanks, continue doing great work.

Thanks for your understanding. We’re working towards completion, however, we’ve fallen slightly behind this week because of staff vacations and various press activities.

News update

A few points haven’t been brought up by you or any readers recently, so I figured I’d highlight them.

The Sea of Stars DLC has been released!

It’s completely free as well, which feels insane since it appears rather impressive. I’m eager to play it this upcoming weekend when I have some extra hours available.

Another point that hasn’t been brought up is that if you already have Hogwarts Legacy for theSwitch, you can purchase it again for around £10 as an upgrade on the same platform.

You can purchase the game on Switch during the sale right now and later get the Switch 2 version for less than £30 altogether, making it quite a good deal.

It doesn’t count as an upgrade since the Switch 2 game isn’t a port.

Continue doing an excellent job! Although I don’t contribute often, I make sure to read something each morning. I’ve come to enjoy this more than the Teletext era now.

Old and new

Excited to hear some

current updates on the Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up game

And it will include at least an entirely new city. Nevertheless, my wish is for the game to encompass both the complete world of Night City and this additional location. Oddly enough, I cannot recall many sequels that take this approach. In the case of GTA, they typically exclude the setting from the original game when introducing a new one, and as far as I know, others follow suit similarly.

Oddly enough, the sole instance I recall where something similar occurred was with Pokémon Gold and Silver, as they featured an entire map from Red and Blue thanks to none other than Satoru Iwata. While there must be technical explanations for why such instances are rare, moving forward to the PlayStation 5 and beyond might not necessarily bring significant visual upgrades, yet we could see these kinds of features being implemented more effortlessly.

The conclusion of the start

After being reminded that my mom’s significant other isn’t particularly fond of me, I’ve brightened up thanks to two wonderful updates. First off, Stellar Blade will be receiving a follow-up shortly; it hits PCs next month. Additionally, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is set for release on PlayStation 5 during the summertime—a development I had eagerly awaited. Simply considering the visuals, it promises an engaging experience. With these announcements and Gears Of War coming out on PlayStation as well, Xbox’s status seems clear—it survives primarily due to Game Pass.

This marks just the beginning. “Halo” is set to launch on PlayStation 5. Other titles like “Fable,” “Avowed,” “State Of Decay 3,” and “Starfield” also made the list. Looking back, these developments were well-deserved. Due to the underperformance of the Xbox One, Microsoft fell significantly behind during that console cycle, whereas Sony continued advancing without pause.
I didn’t purchase an Xbox One; instead, I opted for the PlayStation 4 in 2013. After acquiring mine from Argos in 2014, I found little reason to reconsider the Xbox brand.

Currently, Microsoft is facing repercussions for their poor choices, which they fully deserve. If I were Phil Spencer, I would scrap the planned portable device since it’s headed toward failure—possibly even more so than the Xbox One. Even ASUS won’t be able to salvage Xbox.

Direct from the source

I’m always fascinated by

Nintendo’s Developer Q&A Sessions

They’re incredibly thorough and authentic, yet I feel they don’t receive adequate acknowledgment. Nintendo has an image of being tight-lipped and remote, whereas Sony and Microsoft wouldn’t engage in such practices. Instead, they offer developers’ quotes that are likely crafted by their marketing teams.

Who could have imagined that they had been working on Mario Kart World for eight years, or that they were developing Switch 2 games as early as 2020, according to initial specifications? It seems that such extensive preparation was necessary, which makes it particularly intriguing to learn specific timelines and hear these revelations directly from the source.

In stock now

After reading your piece about how to secure a Switch 2 pre-order, I finally snagged one for myself. Initially, I intended to wait things out, but ultimately, I couldn’t resist jumping into the action with the latest Mario Kart game. However, I believe this purchase could turn out to be a wise long-term investment. Additionally, considering recent trends, we may see another rise in console prices down the line.

A little over a week since securing my pre-order, I’ve periodically revisited various stores and online platforms to gauge whether I scored well snagging mine initially. Each visit revealed ongoing promotions—be they for bundles including items like the Mario Kart game, The Legend of Zelda package, a camera accessory, or an SD card set. Out of sheer curiosity, I found myself checking back roughly three to four more times, tempted each instance to secure another preorder. This raises questions: Is this indicative of Nintendo effectively thwarting scalping efforts? Or perhaps these offers persist because they’re priced beyond reach or simply not compelling enough for most buyers?

I was unable to secure an Xbox Series X on launch day due to the prevalence of online bots, but things seem to have improved with the most recent Nintendo console release. This change appears positive for all involved, excluding the scalpers.

GC:

It’s difficult to determine, but there doesn’t seem to be any sign of reduced demand, considering analysts believe.

Nintendo seems to be overly conservative with its sales forecasts.

They consistently mentioned their desire to avoid any shortages upon release, so it seems like their strategy paid off. This success might have been aided by the simultaneous debut of the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 during the pandemic when both consoles competed for production capacity and materials. In comparison, the Switch 2 benefits from launching during a less busy period for game releases.

I had absolutely no clue that Fortnite hasn’t been available on mobile devices for the past five years. I assumed it would be most prominent in that format, but apparently not?

Mouse

GC:

No, it’s one of the smallest. Apparently not even Fortnite fans want to play with touchscreen controls.

I would absolutely not spend £80 on a video game, even with the possibility of getting it cheaper later. The initial high price tag alone would be enough to deter me.
