Kroger Leads Revival: First Tenant Announced for Former Richland Mall Site

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A well-known supermarket chain is set to open a new outlet in the vicinity of the formerRichland Mall site in Greater Columbia.

The City of Forest Acres along with Southeastern Development revealed on Thursday that Kroger plans to construct a 120,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace at the location.

The upcoming store will feature a drive-through pharmacy, a gas station, pick-up services, and an onsite Starbucks.

“We’re thrilled to join forces with the team launching our new Kroger Marketplace for the community. Given our roles as an employer, food processor, retailer, healthcare provider, among others, we feel a duty to foster positive transformation and fulfill our mission of nourishing the human spirit,” stated Victor Smith, President of Kroger’s Atlanta Division.

The City of Forest Acres has additionally issued a revised blueprint for the upcoming development.

The updated proposal encompasses multifamily dwellings, several eateries, retail outlets, additional spots for assorted stores, and also features a Kroger location.

The proposal also features an envisaged six-acre public park slated for construction alongside the new development.

Southeastern Development Associates is presently dismantling the million-square-foot building and clearing debris at the location to prepare for construction commencement.

The firm anticipates that all debris will be removed entirely, and they will secure the required permissions to commence construction of the apartments by late 2025 or early 2026.

The recently constructed Kroger building is presently the second one planned for development.

In the meantime, authorities stated that the present Kroger at 3403 Forest Drive will stay operational as the new Kroger Marketplace is being built. The existing store is anticipated to shut down after the opening of the new one.

“The Kroger announcement positions this public-private redevelopment initiative for success and will result in a location that both Forest Acres and the greater Columbia region can take pride in and appreciate,” stated Jason Long, Vice President at Southeastern Development Associates.

The present objective is for certain enterprises to be prepared to unlock their entrances by 2027.
