— The masked warriors of lucha libre are emerging from the ring and into the limelight with the Comic-Con Museum’s newest exhibition titled,
Sangre, Sudor y Mito
which means blood, sweat, and myth.

The exhibition showcases “the art and tradition of Mexican wrestling.”

The event starts on Thursday, May 22 at the Comic Con Museum located in Balboa Park.

The museum states that the latest exhibition delves into the profound beginnings of lucha libre, following its strong foundations within Mexican customs and legends, as well as its influence on mainstream arts and narratives via cinema, comic books, visual art, and attire.

The displays will include signs and explanations in both English and Spanish.

This exhibition embodies the vibrant spirit and culture of lucha libre, demonstrating how it spans generational divides and brings people together,” stated Comic-Con Museum Executive Director Rita Vandergaw. “We’re excited to collaborate once more with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego to showcase this cultural heritage via artistic expressions, historical insights, firsthand accounts from renowned wrestlers, and interactive experiences.

The exhibit was crafted specifically for the Comic-Con Museum in partnership with the Museo de La Lucha Libre Mexicana (MULLME), as stated by the Mexican Consulate in San Diego.

Lucha libre holds a special place in the hearts of Mexicans,” stated Alicia Kerber, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego. “The sport’s influence on our pop culture runs deep across generations. This exhibition aims to bring the vibrant world of Mexican wrestling to a fresh audience and provide joy to long-time enthusiasts alike. We’re thankful to the Comic Con Museum, Museo de la Lucha Libre Mexicana from Tijuana, and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre based in Mexico City for joining us in celebrating this enduring part of Mexican heritage and cultural icon.

The museum will showcase various elements of lucha libre including:

  • Highlighting “Amazonas,” this piece celebrates the remarkable women wrestlers of Lucha Libre. It includes an image of a Thunder Rosa costume worn by a notable local female fighter.
  • Genuine masks spanning various time periods, prestigious championship belts, intricate outfits, antique playthings, scarce keepsakes, and distinctive souvenirs.
  • Images and video snippets documenting legendary wrestling highlights.

The launch of the event known as Lucha Fest will take place between noon and 6 p.m. on Saturday at The Soap Factory, located in Logan Heights. (Situated at 2995 Commercial Street near downtown San Diego.)
