Money App Used by 745 Million People Crashes Worldwide

  • Apple to Pay Out Approximately $100 Million Over Allegations That iPhones Monitored Users

On Friday, Apple Pay experienced global downtime, preventing users from being able to make transactions or retrieve their money.

Based on Apple’s system status dashboard, the

outage

Started at 11:44 AM ET and was additionally impacting Wallet, Apple Card, and Apple Cash.

The technology company’s System Status indicated that all problems had been addressed by 1:01 PM Eastern Time.

Apple Pay, boasting over 745 million users worldwide with approximately 60 million based in the U.S., stands as a key component within Apple’s digital framework.

Nonetheless, Apple refrained from revealing the number of users impacted, merely mentioning that “a certain number of users might have encountered a problem with this service.”

The outage-monitoring website DownDetector received more than 2,000 user reports from the U.S., primarily concerning problems with payments and difficulties moving money.

Angered customers turned to social media to express their frustrations.

One user tweeted on X that having Apple Pay malfunction when they left home with only their phone was disastrous,

Many voiced their frustration with reverting to using physical debit cards, which seemed like a step backward in our predominantly cash-free society.

The service disruption also affected applications dependent on Apple Pay, such as ride-sharing platforms like Lyft and Uber, which left certain users unable to find rides and stuck without transportation options.

‘A frustrated user tweeted on X stating, “Apple Pay isn’t working right now, so I am unable to pay for my Uber to the airport,”‘

“Apple Pay isn’t working right now, and I basically just stepped out with my phone, keys, and some lip gloss. Oh my gosh,” one user commented.

Even though the disruption impacted users worldwide, the United States seems to have been affected the most.

According to

DownDetector’s outage map

Major cities such as New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have reported extensive problems.

The website also reported disruptions in the UK and certain areas of Europe, albeit on a lesser scale.
