Consumer Affairs
Released its ranking of states with the most severe road rage issues, providing potential road-trippers advance notice about which areas demand heightened vigilance.
The report determined the states with the most severe road rage by examining statistics related to fatal accidents caused by negligent or reckless operation of vehicles, infractions linked to hazardous driving, and traffic events involving gunfire. According to this approach, the analysis revealed that Louisiana topped the list as the state with the worst road rage for the second consecutive year.
According to the findings, nearly 60 percent of the state’s deadly accidents and fatalities resulted from aggressive or reckless driving, marking the highest percentages across the country. Louisiana not only boasts the top overall figures for fatal incidents and casualties related to such behaviors but also ranks first in terms of these occurrences per 100,000 residents. Furthermore, it holds the distinction of having the second-largest number of traffic infractions associated with aggressive or negligent behavior as well as speeding offenses.
This careless driving can also come with serious consequences (besides the potential of hurting yourself or others), including up to 90 days in jail for first-time offenders charged with “reckless driving” and up to six months in jail for second-time offenders, Consumer Affairs reported.
Although it’s not the sole state where motorists need to cultivate some inner peace.
New Mexico secured the second position “partly due to its relatively high incidence of traffic accidents associated with gun violence, which occurs nearly four times more frequently than the national average,” according to the report. “This pattern mirrors the broader trends in gun-related violence within the state; Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization focused on preventing gun violence, points out that New Mexico experiences gun violence at a rate close to twice the nationwide figure.”
Completing the top trio of violators is Colorado, where data shows they have the greatest incidence of offenses related to aggressive or reckless driving as well as speeding per 100,000 residents. The report notes this figure surpasses the nationwide average by more than eightfold, shedding light on why Colorado advanced one position in our rankings, rising from the fourth slot previously.
Arkansas and Montana rounded out the top five, while Maine was named the calmest of all the states in the nation for driving.
