Unlocking Dollars: Chef Jose Andres Urges Donors to Boost Giving Beyond the Bank

José Andrés

recalls his visit to Haiti following the event

devastating 2010 earthquake

that the government estimates led to over 300,000 deaths.

We started cooking in the streets, as you understand?” explained the Spanish chef who won a James Beard Award and oversees over 40 restaurants globally. “In the aftermath of an earthquake, I provided food, so there weren’t any photographers or cameras; it was just me and my friends handling everything.

This marked the beginning of World Central Kitchen, now an influential non-profit organization that raises hundreds of millions each year to deliver food swiftly during humanitarian emergencies. Since those early days, Andrés’ public image has continued to expand. His collaboration with Martha Stewart on their NBC series “Yes, Chef” remains ongoing, along with the recent release of his latest book titled “Change the Recipe: Because You Can’t Build a Better World Without Breaking Some Eggs,” which became available last month.

“I often find that when I arrive, everyone has brought their camera,” he explained. “That’s fine though; I simply proceed with what I’m doing and offer my time freely.”

Andrés’ work has earned numerous awards. Earlier this year, he was honored with the

Presidential Medal of Freedom

From former President Joe Biden, who stated that the winners “responded to the call to serve and inspired others to follow suit.”

Ricardo Leite, who serves as the senior vice president, leads international markets for Discover and also holds the position of president at Diners Club International. He stated that recently, Diners Club contributed $750,000 to World CentralKitchen, which will help supply around 150,000 meals.

“When looking for a nonprofit to collaborate with for our 75th anniversary, we wanted one that builds on our Together for Change corporate social responsibility program to create change where it matters most,” said Leite. “This collaboration allows us to pay forward our legacy by helping provide comforting meals to those most in need.”

Recently, Andrés had an insightful conversation with The Associated Press regarding his approach to handling the world’s continuing crises. The discussion was condensed and clarified for publication purposes.

_____

Why does the Diners Club International contribution to World Central Kitchen hold such significance?

A: The significance of this message lies not just in encouraging donations to the World CentralKitchen, but also in highlighting the crucial role that philanthropy will play during a time when we’re witnessing budget cuts. This is particularly relevant as USAID faces reductions.

no longer being active

And it once held significant importance globally. NGOs such as World CentralKitchen in America and internationally play a crucial role since they step into areas where governments frequently do not venture… This conveys a powerful message to all other foundations, private enterprises, and individuals: Everyone must be mindful of acknowledging the essential efforts these organizations undertake to provide aid or address issues faced by numerous people both within America and beyond.

Will World CentralKitchenneed to intervene to address the void created byUSAIDbudget reductions?

A: We’ve never received much support from them, but we collaborate with them. World CentralKitchen operates in Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake. Back in the day,

There would have been a quick reaction force from USAID.

Showing up in these situations to assist those nations during emergencies. The answer is indeed yes. We’re not omnipresent, naturally, but wherever we operate, our involvement tends to be quite significant at the onset of such crises. This involves releasing funds that enable us to provide more than just food; this includes supplies like water and all necessary resources. Our approach aligns with how World Central Kitchen functions ideally. These funds are directed through the local economy, ensuring that as we respond to the crisis, we also support the local economic environment.

Earlier this month, World CentralKitchen was forced to

suspend operations in Gaza

Since you ran out of supplies. Are you optimistic that this situation will improve shortly? (This interview took place prior to Monday when

Israel lifted its three-month blockade

on supplies to Gaza.)

A: We stand prepared and await the moment when reason prevails. Our wish extends to the release of all captives, ensuring that individuals in Gaza no longer fear aerial assaults threatening their lives. It is essential for both Palestinians and Israelis to envision a future filled with tranquility. Achieving this requires an end to hostilities—where attacks cease against Gaza as well as Israel, hostages regain freedom, and children from Gaza may return to educational pursuits and aspire to reconstruct their communities. Most citizens possess sound judgment; they yearn for peaceful coexistence alongside economic flourishing. A small minority should not impose restrictions upon the multitude desiring harmony and safety.

Is now the moment for significant contributors to increase their giving?

A: I believe that keeping money in a bank doesn’t serve much purpose beyond accruing interest. However, using funds to benefit individuals and investing in a brighter future seems far more worthwhile.
