Which Charleston Roads Will Close for the Pro Road Nationals?

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — As the city prepares for the thrill of the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships beginning next week, officials are also addressing what this event entails.

Certain roads will be shut down, and motorists are advised to find detours.

City officials in Charleston are getting ready for the upcoming race, which indicates that road closures will begin even prior to the main event.

Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority

is also temporarily relocating its transit center to Donnally and Summers streets.

From Friday, May 16 to Sunday, May 18:

Race Preparation

Kanawha Boulevard will close between Capitol Street and Clendenin Street starting at noon on Friday, May 16. This closure will last all the way through Monday, May 26. Eastbound traffic on the Boulevard will be routed onto Clendenin St., and westbound traffic will be routed onto Court Street.

On Friday, there will be no on-street parking available on Court Street or Summers Street between Kanawha Boulevard and Virginia Street.


Monday, May 19:

Paracycling Road Race

Kanawha Boulevard will stay closed between Capitol and Clendenon streets.

From 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m., the City will be implementing extra road closures for the day.

From 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Kanawha Boulevard will be closed between Stockton Street and Hale Street. However, the right westbound lane of Kanawha Boulevard extending from Clendenin Street to Pennsylvania Avenue will remain accessible for vehicles. Local authorities advise residents, commuters, and those with appointments in the vicinity to consider alternative routes during these hours.

Street closures will occur during the event, so individuals working downtown or needing to traverse these zones should allow additional time for their journeys. Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers will be present at these spots to assist with directing traffic safely around race intervals.

  • Travel from Truslow Boulevard to Virginia Street.

According to city authorities, the municipal facilities such as the garages and lots at the Municipal Auditorium and the Shanklin Parking Garage won’t be accessible during this time.

For the duration of the event, both the entry and exit points at the Summers Street garage will remain shut; however, access can still be gained via Lee Street leading into Capitol Street through theSpyros parking area. Individuals exiting the garage should turn right into the Spyros lot before returning to CapitolStreet.

People heading to Mary C. Snow Elementary School should use 2nd Avenue and Florida Street instead of Kanawha Boulevard.


Tuesday, May 20:

Kanawha Blvd. will remain closed between Capitol and Clendenin streets.

  • The Southside Bridge will be shut down, redirecting traffic coming from Bridge Road and Loudon Heights Road to Ferry Street.
